Oleg Golubkov

7 years old, Ekaterinburg.
Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).
In April the Posaconazole drug was purchased for the amount of 48,000 rubles.
Oleg is currently staying in England, where he is being prepared for the bone marrow transplantation.
We will follow the developments.

Oleg is an unusual child, well known in the medical community not only of Russia, but of the whole world. Immediately after the birth he was diagnosed with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Sick with this rare form of primary immunodeficiency, a child lacks lymphocytes, which play a major role in defending the host. Therefore, any infection can be fatal. Oleg was taken to the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital (RCCH) in Moscow, where a stem cell transplantation was performed on him (his mother was the donor). Oleg was in a very serious condition, he didn’t eat anything and didn’t retain immunoglobulins and protein even for 1 day. Being 1 year old, he weighed only 6 kg. Nevertheless, Oleg was everyone’s favorite in the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation (DBMT), he was never discouraged, had his infant sense of humor and always stayed in a good mood. The cells didn’t take root well, therefore the second stem cell transplantation was carried out soon. Even after that lymphocytes didn’t appear, but... he recovered in some unexplainable way – all symptoms of the diseases were gone. A weak child, who had no strength even to sit up, turned into a ruddy-cheeked chubby boy. Miracle happened right before the eyes. Oleg got well.

In total, he spent 1.5 years in a sterile box in the DBMT. TV journalist Kirill Nabutov shot a program about Oleg, and a couple years later came to Yekaterinburg in order to shoot a sequel – a Christmas story about the miracle, all the hardships that the boy standed, and the way he lives now.

All these years Oleg lived a full life of a young boy – he was riding his bicycle, snorkeling, making friends. Oleg has bunch of friends, he gets along with people very easily. The kid attended a development preschool, and qualified for admission to a bilingual gymnasium, in which disciplines are taught both in Russian and English. He started school in September 2010, and in October of the same year became a winner of a municipal competition in writing. His work was published in the “Favorite beetle” magazine. Besides, he was singing in a vocal ensemble and was studying Wushu. When he was very young, he was saying he’d like to become a priest, but now he is dreaming of becoming a chemist, in order to invent something the world needs very much…

In September 2010 Oleg’s immune system unexpectedly malfunctioned. Doctors from the RCCH diagnosed advanced immunodeficiency, autoimmune skin and mucous membrane lesions. They made a decision to carry out a bone marrow transplantation (Nastya, the sister of Oleg, was to become the donor), since it was the only way to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

To everyone’s dismay and astonishment, Nastya didn’t match as a donor… Considering this fact and the unusual immune status of Oleg, doctors, along with the professors from the UK, France, Israel, and Germany, who were also consulted, decided to transfer the boy to a specialized hospital in Newcastle (England). Its physicians have great experience in managing such patients and defining the tactics of unrelated transplantation. The examination found that Oleg certainly needs a new, unrelated transplantation to be performed on him.

Oleg is currently being prepared for the transplantation in the UK. But until the transplantation is carried out, he vitally needs the Posaconazole drug, since the boy has no immune defense against outdoor environment, bacteria, viruses, fungi, malignancies, etc.

The cost of the drug is about 50,000 rubles per vial.
